Distorted Thinking That We All Do When We're Not At Our Best - "Polarized Thinking"

Things are black and white and good and bad. You have to be perfect or you're a failure. There is no middle ground for anything. People and things are wonderful or horrible. Your reactions may even swing from one emotional extreme to the other. You miss all of the nuances of gray - of the positive and negative co-existing in every situation, every circumstance and every person.

The greatest impact polarized thinking has is on how you judge yourself. If you are not perfect and brilliant then you must be a failure and an idiot. There is never any leeway for mistakes or mediocrity. And when mistakes by self or others are made, they are judged harshly and never forgotten or forgiven.

What area of your life or what current or past situation may be causing you angst due to polarized thinking? What is another way to look at it?
